Meet the Leadership Team

President

William H. M. Patterson

William “B” Patterson guides and oversees the efforts of both Newbridge Services and its sister company, Cumberland Surety. Both organizations work together on the expansion and deployment of their partner Indemnity National Insurance Company. These responsibilities require B to direct Newbridge Services to perform with both the flexibility of a new organization and the stable experience of a seasoned industry player.

Over the past 28 years, B has worked in virtually all departments and areas helping develop the programs that both Newbridge Services and Cumberland use today.

Prior to being named President of Newbridge Services on January 1, 2018, he had been Vice President of the company for five years. During this period, Newbridge Services, as a consultant and contractor, was involved in several large reclamation projects. B organized the field forces to budget, plan, and implement the projects. He managed staff, equipment, outside vendors, and contractors. He performed these duties for projects where Newbridge Services was acting as a consultant and/or the primary contractor in the completion of reclamation efforts for operators, insurance companies, government agencies, and engineering companies.

B graduated from Centre College in 1986 and joined Cumberland Surety in 1989.

President

Steve Hohmann

Steve Hohmann is responsible for managing Newbridge Services’ overall regulatory policy activities to ensure its consistency with the business needs of the company.

Additionally, he monitors the public policy issues in Congress and relevant regulatory agencies that serve our industry. This includes developing legal, regulatory, and congressional strategies.

Prior to joining our company in 2016, Steve served as Commissioner for the Kentucky Department for Natural Resources.

In 2016, Steve received the Kentucky Environmental Quality Commission’s annual award for outstanding public service.

As Commissioner, he supervised the daily operations of the Department. The Department employs over 600 people who regulate all mine reclamation and permitting, mine safety, and oil and gas operations within the Commonwealth and also administers the Kentucky forestry and conservation programs.

Steve has also chaired the Kentucky Oil and Gas Workgroup, a multi-stakeholder group that studied and recommended regulatory improvements to Kentucky’s oil and gas program that were enacted by the Kentucky General Assembly in 2015.

He has twice served as president of the National Association of Abandoned Mine Land Programs.

From 2012 to 2015, Steve was the Kentucky representative to the Interstate Mining Compact Commission.

Steve was also the recipient of the 2009 Stan Barnard Award, given by the National Association of Abandoned Mine Lands programs for outstanding contributions and dedication to the reclamation of abandoned mine lands nationwide.

Steve holds a BA in Political Science from Morehead State University with minors in History and Economics.

VICE PRESIDENT - Field Operations

Keith B. Smith

Keith Smith has nearly 36 years of all-around experience in the mining industry. His career includes both hands-on mining experience and extensive history in the permitting and inspection/enforcement divisions of the Kentucky mining regulatory program.

Keith helps coordinate all Newbridge Services field representatives.

In Keith’s current role, he coordinates all of Newbridge’s inspection activities and provides oversight to the company’s field representatives.

His cumulative years of experience allow him to provide thoughtful, educated risk analyses to Cumberland Surety’s reclamation bonding program.

He was Executive Director for the Office of the Reclamation Guaranty Fund where he was involved in the drafting of the state laws and regulations that are the foundation for the Fund, and was responsible for the implementation and management of the Fund in the first two and one-half years of its existence.

While serving in many capacities with the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Keith acquired a wealth of experience and knowledge regarding the operation and regulation of the coal industry, especially relating to reclamation operations and performance bonding.

His other positions for the Commonwealth included Environmental Reclamation Inspector, Environmental Permit Technician, Environmental Section Supervisor, Branch Manager, Assistant Director (Mine Reclamation and Mine Permits divisions), and Acting Director (Mine Reclamation division).

Keith holds a Bachelor of Sciences degree in microbiology from the University of Kentucky with a minor in chemistry.
